The boys of BRMC are 100% rock and roll. Want proof? Tonight’s show
in Chicago was cut short due to city curfews on all-ages shows, and the
band was forced to stop playing at 10pm on the dot. Before the last
song, Peter apologized to the shocked crowd, saying, "They’re making us
stop, but we’re going to go play out in the alley until the cops come."
So with that, the band ended with "All You Do Is Talk" and left the
stage.
We all made a mad dash for the door, when lo and behold, Peter and
Robert came out of the side door and started playing the corner near
the alley as they had promised. A huge crowd quickly gathered; people
erupted into sing-a-longs to "Love Burns" and "Complicated Situation."
As the boys played on, security once again broke up the party and
insisted it was time to go. But the crowd wouldn’t let them stop, and
it was clear both Robert and Peter wanted to play.
For
a band used to playing 20+ song sets, this was an early night and they
weren’t ready to call it quits. So as security walked in one direction,
the guys walked in the opposite direction straight down Sheffield
Avenue. The crowd followed as the guys played like wandering minstrels
with a traveling audience. We settled around them once again as they
began to play near a tree, and several brave souls climbed the tree for
a better view. As they played, sirens started to drown out the acoustic
guitars, and cops surrounded the area and started to break up the
crowd. At this, Robert and Peter said, "Drive safe" and headed back
toward the venue.
As Robert walked back, he saw his grandmother and stopped to hug her
only a few feet from where I was standing. People began cheering and
thanking him for the band’s genuine love of their fans and the art of
true rock and roll. The grin on his face was enough to see that he was
about to break into one final song, once again, on the street in front
of the venue. And this time, I had a front row view. Robert played
"Sympathetic Noose" to an elated crowd just as the rain started coming
down, and even he couldn’t hide what a great moment in time this really
was for everyone: for him, for his grandmother, and for all of us.
Just as he finished, security once again beckoned, so he thanked the crowd and whisked his grandmother inside the venue.
In truth, I’ve seen BRMC play many times, and they’re always
absolutely amazing within the confines of a venue with good lights,
good sound and a safe distance between them and the audience. But this
experience proves everything you’ve ever thought about the band. They
truly live rock and roll. It could be quite easily construed as cliche.
But in the case of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, it’s completely
genuine, and every person there tonight felt it.
As
if the show itself wasn't amazing enough, I can't even begin to
describe how fucking awesome it was to get to see them play outside on
the street. There were a couple songs I was disappointed they didn't
play during the show.....Sympathetic Noose was one of them. You can
imagine how bad I freaked out when Robert started playing it right in
front of me.
I was pretty much speechless the entire way home. There are more videos (and pics) HERE if you're interested.
The Cobbs were the opening act and they kicked some serious fucking ass. I definitely recommend checking them out. If you go to their site (or their myspace page) you can listen to some of the tracks from their cd. They were at the merch table after the show and when they saw me buying their cd, the guitarist tapped my arm and was like "thank you so much!" and got all excited when I asked them to sign it for me. They all introduced themselves and asked my name...they were so cute. The drummer wrote: "Candice: Thanks for buying the best record EVER!!" Seriously, man......how fucking cute is that???? They were awesome. And they were the perfect opener for BRMC. They were so good, I gladly would have paid the $30 to see them alone. I hope I get a chance to see them again sometime.
I'm falling behind on my posting lately. I still have to share my Kings of Leon story from last week Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.
Anyway, next up: Ultra Sonic Edukators tomorrow at Schubas!!!!!
